WAMA 2009 Scholarship Winner – First Place $ 750.00

Courtney E. Weaver, Jersey Shore Area Senior High School,
Information Science, Pennsylvania State University, Main Campus

Throughout high school, I have been consistently active in various activities while working diligently to maintain a high grade point average. Balancing a part-time job, academics, and extracurricular activities requires a great amount of determination and persistence. I have developed excellent work ethics through these qualities and hope to utilize my ability to work hard in my future endeavors. One of my main interests is participating in the Future Business Leaders of American organization. I have been an active member throughout my four years of high school and I enjoy my position as the senior reporter this year as well as having the opportunity to attend regional and state competitions in business related events such as Business Procedures and Database Applications.

This fall, I will have the opportunity to attend the Pennsylvania State University where I will double major in Information Science and Technology and Security Risk Analysis with an emphasis on leadership and management. By attaining higher education, I hope to acquire knowledge that will enable me to utilize technology in order to improve the quality of life for others. For example, IST can be used in numerous fields including medical technology, government, biotechnology, security, etc. In a world that is dominated by technology, the education provided at Penn State will undoubtedly make many opportunities available to me.

I plan on applying my determination and work ethics in the continuation of my education. My intended majors will grant me the opportunities to enter the field of technology. I hope to obtain a position with a financial institution, security contractor, or government agency where I will be on the frontlines of confronting the challenges of information security presented by technology. I want to acquire the capabilities to promote positive change with the use of technology in business.

Information Science and Technology plays an integral role in daily operation of businesses; it is a fundamental aspect needed in order to maintain a successful, smoothly run business that will uphold its integrity. My major will allow me to take advantage of a wide variety of career opportunities.

I hope to inspire other girls to pursue technology fields in which women are often times minorities. I plan on breaking through any “glass ceilings” present in this area of study and achieving success while reaching my full potential. I take my ability to acquire higher education very seriously and view it as an opportunity and a privilege.
